[4] Reveals that Gaius is, more than likely, one of John's converts. John is overjoyed that his "child" is following truth.
[5-8] John spends time
encouraging the church to care for fellow believers in Jesus Christ. He reminds
the church, "... you are being faithful to God when you care for the
traveling teachers who pass through." It pleases God when believers
provide for one another's physical needs. It is important to use discernment
when deciding who and what you will support. John wants the church to
understand that it is the believer's responsibility to support the spreading of
the gospel. He doesn't want the traveling teachers to depend on funding from
unbelievers. After all, it's believer’s duty to carry the load of ministry.
