[1-3] John is writing a letter to his dear friend, Gaius. Gaius is well loved in the church. He follows sound doctrine and stands for truth. These verses indicate that Gaius could be ill or could have health issues; as John wishes Gaius health and strength. John admonishes Gaius for: his faithfulness to the truth, hospitality, love, and support for the traveling teachers of the gospel.
