Colossians

Who is involved?
Paul, an apostle chosen by the will of God. Timothy, Paul’s brother in Christ.  Epaphras, the pastor of the church in Colosse.  The Church in Colosse.  False Teachers.

What is happening?
Epaphras went to Rome to visit Paul and tell him about the heretics in Colosse.  Heretics [false teachers] were preaching to the Colossians and Paul wanted to raise awareness to the church.

Where is it happening?
Paul wrote to the church of Colosse while he was imprisoned in Rome.

When is it happening?
About 60-62 A.D.

Why is it happening?
False teachers [heretics] wanted to church to deny the deity of Jesus.  They wanted to Colosse church to believe that Jesus wasn’t God.  It was important for Paul to teach the church the truth concerning Jesus Christ [that he was God and Redeemer].  Their theology needed to be made right before they could continue growing and serving the church.

How does it point to Jesus?

It showed the church in Colosse that Jesus Christ: is preeminent, all-sufficient, Lord of the Universe, Creator, took on human flesh, the “invisible image of God” [Col. 1:15], Sovereign, has all authority, head of the church [Col. 1:18], and also the reconciler [Col. 1:20-22].
