Ecclesiastes 1:5-14

[1:5-14] “The sun rises and the sun sets, then hurries around to rise again.”  Solomon points out there is dependability in the rising and the setting of the sun.  “The rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full.”  Solomon believes there are fundamental laws of nature.

Mankind is dissatisfied with how much they see or hear.  They can never be satisfied and become weary.  Solomon says in verse 9, “History merely repeats itself.  It has all been done before.  Nothing under the sun is truly new.”  We may have new inventions, but mankind is the same, no matter what the setting or time.  The inventions give mankind nothing new.  Mankind wants to be innovative, new, fresh and remembered for all time.  “We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.” Ecclesiastes 1:11

Solomon felt that life was futile.  He believed it all to be meaningless – like chasing the wind.
