Jude | Overview

Who is involved?
Jude is the brother of James and the 1/2 brother of Jesus.  [Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3] He identifies himself as a slave of Jesus Christ.  His given name was Judas, but he is referenced in the Bible as Jude [so as not to be confused with Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus].  The name Jude is also the English form of Judas.

All who have been called loved and kept by God the Father.  In other words, believers in Jesus Christ.

What is happening?
Jude encourages believers in Jesus Christ to be strong in the faith and to stand for truth.

Where is it happening?
Jude doesn't give any indication as to where he is located or to whom he is writing this letter.

When is it happening?
[A.D. 68-70] Jude is a difficult book to date because Jude doesn't reference any individuals, churches or locations in his letter.  Most scholars believe that Jude was written sometime around the book of 2 Peter because they are somewhat similar.

Why is it happening?
To Cause the Audience to Learn:  Believers, Kept by God, Must Stand Against False Teachers.

How does it point to Jesus?
I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God's marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives.  The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. | Jude 1:4 NLT

Enoch, who lived in the seventh generation after Adam, prophesied about these people.  He said, "Listen!  The Lord is coming with countless thousands of his holy ones to execute judgment on the people of the world.  He will convict every person of all the ungodly things they have done and for all the insults that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”  These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires.  They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want. | Jude 1:14-16 NLT
