Philemon 1:1-7

05 March 2018

[1-3] Paul is writing a personal letter to his friend Philemon.  It is addressed specifically to Philemon and is dealing with a very personal matter between Philemon and his runaway slave, Onesimus.  Paul gives a special greeting to Philemon's wife [Apphia], their son [Archippus], and to the church that meets inside their home.  He asks God to grant them grace and peace.

[4-6] Paul is in the habit of praying for his friend, Philemon.  Paul is encouraged because he hears of all the good things that Philemon is doing for God's people.  He knows that Philemon is strong in the faith and in loving God's people.  Paul is praying that Philemon will be generous, out of an overflow from the generosity that Christ Jesus has given Philemon.

[7] Philemon has a wonderful testimony of hospitality.  It fills Paul with joy and comfort as he thinks about Philemon's love & kindness to God's people.
