[2:1-8] Paul was agonizing in prayer for the church in Colosse & Laodicea. They were lukewarm and they had shifted their
focus off Jesus. Paul prayed that they
would be bound in love and growing in their faith; as their faith would grow, they would know
Christ Jesus more. According to
verse 3, “In him [Jesus] lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Paul told them these things so they wouldn’t
be deceived by false doctrine and earthly philosophy.
The church needed to be instructed to follow the word of God. He helped them understand what it means to be
a Christian. Just as the believers
accepted Christ Jesus as their Lord, they should continue to follow him. Paul encourages them to be deeply rooted in Jesus
Christ. To follow Jesus is to walk with
Jesus. To walk with Jesus is to reject
human thinking and philosophies. Verse 8
says, “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding
nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this
world, rather than from Christ.”
