Galatians 3:15-29

10 July 2018

[3:15-29] The law changed nothing concerning God’s promise to Abraham.  Galatians 3:17 says, “This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses.  God would be breaking His promise.”  “Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise [the coming of Jesus Christ] to show people their sins.  But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised” [Galatians 3:19a].  The law was not given to save sinners but instead revealed mankind’s sin.

“Is there a conflict, then, between God’s law and God’s promises?  Absolutely not!  If the law could give us new life, we could be made right with God by obeying it.  But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom by believing in Jesus Christ” [Galatians 3:21-22].

The law makes mankind a servant, but faith makes mankind a son!   “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” [Galatians 3:26].  Whenever an individual believes [by faith] in Jesus Christ, they are heirs of God’s promise to Abraham.
